Copying from Amir: Items in the language list are in a mix of RTL and LTR languages. This makes the list somewhat strangely aligned. Centering it makes sense - that's how language lists are shown on an iPhone, for example.
It doesn't look very good on a tablet screen for one and it also creates an inconsistency with the other lists we have e.g. nearby, watchlist and pages. Adding a small amount of CSS for one specific use case seems like a bad code smell so I'd like us to be a bit more cautious here. Would it not be better to add dir attributes to list items?
Change 127613 had a related patch set uploaded by Jdlrobson: Center the language list https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/127613
Doesn't look like this is being actively worked on.
Change 127613 abandoned by Jdlrobson: Center the language list Reason: This patch has been abandoned due to lack of activity. Note this should not be taken as an aggressive move - it is simply to clear up the code review queue. Please feel free to amend this patch and resubmit this at a later date! Thanks :) https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/127613
Prioritization and scheduling of this bug is tracked on Trello card https://trello.com/c/OD3t1a5u
What are the steps or platform required to see this? A screenshot perhaps?
Created attachment 15462 [details] Arabic a RTL language, shown 2 from bottom is written in LTR
Let's just add a direction attribute to each individual language in the overlay? It would also allow us to categorise languages in the overlay by RTL/LTR which would be a neat feature...
Amir it seems the API doesn't return the direction of a language. Do you know if it is possible with a query like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ApiSandbox#action=query&meta=siteinfo&format=json&siprop=general%7Clanguages ?
