I attempted to upload a jpg file of ~40mb, 16,000 x 10,0000 px. This resulted in what seemed like a crash to launcher (although the crash report dialog never popped up, so perhaps not a true crash) each time, usually upon opening whatever app tried to make a thumbnail of it (Gallery, or other gallery apps, or file managers with thumbnailing, or back at Commons App itself in cases where I used a file manager without thumbnailing). I tried the same thing with the same image in png (~80mb, same dimensions) and it uploaded without issue. (It also generated a thumbnail in the app during upload, even though Wikimedia Commons itself was unable to make a thumbnail from so large a png file!) I tried with a jpg file of ~25mb, 9,000 × 5,625 px. This resulted in the same crash-like behavior, but crashes (with no crash report dialog) took a little longer than with the larger jpg. I was able to enter a file name and start the upload before it crashed. This resulted in crashes each time I re-opened the app. When I turned off the screen before it crashed, the upload status remained in the notification area (unlike when it crashed to launcher, in which case the notification area also got cleared). The upload status was stalled at "Starting...". The next time I re-opened the app, it had generated a thumbnail of the jpg, and it was listed as Failed. I tapped and it queued it then started uploading it, and completed without issue: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Test_big_file.jpeg See also: bug 45437
Testing an updated version with Yuvi, I report some improvements. Large jpg files still choke any Android gallery that tried to load them, and the same thing happens on the title/description view in the app if I choose the file through a file manager that doesn't use thumbnails. For the 25mb file, if I start the upload before it pseudo-crashes, the app will open up again immediately, listing the upload as Failed. The notification remains active, stuck on "Starting". Tapping again in the My uploads view to retry results in a successful upload (although in the single view afterwards, I found that the aspect ratio was wrong). For the 40mb jpg file, I get returned to the My uploads view with a pseudo-crash before I have time to enter a title and begin the upload. (I think the same thing happens with the 25mb file if I don't enter the title and start the upload quickly enough.)
Also, these pseudo-crashes result in killing background apps such as my IRC client that normally never get killed by the system.
Switch to Android component.
As the Mobile Apps Team is focussing on the new, native Wikipedia app, the Commons app is no longer being maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation. I am WONTFIXing all open Commons app bugs to reflect that we will not be spending time fixing them.
