Description Amir E. Aharoni 2011-04-15 18:00:14 UTC
Currently on MediaWiki projects there are two checkboxes under "Beta features" in the "Editing" tab:
* Enable enhanced editing toolbar
* Enable dialogs for inserting links, tables and more

In the English Wikipedia the "Beta features" title was changed to "Usability features", which more or less makes sense, because both of these options are not beta features for a year already. (In many other languages it's still called "Beta features".) It would make even more sense to simply remove this section and put both of these options in the main list of checkboxes.

However, the "Beta features" section can be kept and used for actual Beta features. For example, there's the option to "Use live preview (requires JavaScript) (experimental)" - if it's "experimental", it can be called "a beta feature", even though it's not directly related to the 2009-2010 Vector Beta.

Earlier today you asked for comments on your prioritizing, so here's one: This is definitely a bug and not an "enhancement" request, because the current "beta features" are not beta anymore.

Actually, it's closer to "trivial".

Just in case someone else wants to know what they changed on English Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Prefs-beta?action=history

For other suggestion of what to do with the option "Enable enhanced editing toolbar", see bug 30795.

MediaWiki provides a default message for beta features, but when a extension is using this also for stable features, a bug against the extenion should be created to move it away from beta to another header.

Does [[mw:Extension:BetaFeatures]] helps us solving this bug?
Comment 5 Robin Pepermans (SPQRobin) 2014-03-31 19:18:41 UTC
The bug has in fact been fixed by https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/65468/

However, it seems that has made the "prefs-beta" message (which is in core) be no longer used. So I guess it should be removed and then this bug can be marked fixed.

Change 124133 had a related patch set uploaded by Bartosz Dziewoński:
Remove unused 'prefs-beta' message

Comment 8 Bartosz Dziewoński 2014-04-06 19:30:38 UTC
The 'prefs-beta' turned out to be a little problematic (see the comments there), but this bug is solved either way, so I'm marking it as such.
