When &createpagelink=0 (or similar) is in the url for a search, it shouldn't show the create this page text (MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new) when the page for the search term doesn't exist. In input boxes, there should be an option to enable this. This way, new users won't be tempted to create the page when seeing the results for a prefix search, and there are plenty of other situations where it doesn't make sense to show this too.
Hmmm... smells a little feature creepy but I can see the utility when using it to build meta-tools with input boxes + search. Robert, you want to take this as part of Special:Search UI?
