Hi, and Hajime-mashite, It is being discussed in jawp whether the width of image thumbnails should be specified or not. In jawp, the width of thumbnails is recommended 300 pixels, and in enwp 250-300 pixels. But the default (sizes not specified, and for non-login users) thumbnail size is 180 pixels -- so small. In jawp's discussion, sizes of image thumbnails are proposed not to specify, such as {{Image:xxx.jpg|thumb|description}}, and I (and some other users) oppose the proposal. For login users, it is well-feeling that thumbnail sizes can be altered by user preferences, but the side effects are too big. When default width of thumbnails becomes larger (about 250-300 pixels), side effects will be weaker, so could you consider to make default size larger?] Thank you. (I cannot find similar requests, but I'm sorry if duplicated.)
{{Image:xxx.jpg|thumb|description}} is corrected to [[Image:xxx.jpg|thumb|description]]. Additionally, I request that, if possible, thumbnail sizes can be changed and recorded in browser cookies by non-login users.
At en.WP, we agree that 180px is ridiculously small. It is 180px for all WPs except the Swedish WP, which is 250px, and Wikisource, which is 200px. An RfC poll at en.WP in November yielded overwhelming consensus to move up to at least 220px on the en.WP. See Item 52 at this permalink: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Image_use_policy/Archive_12&oldid=332815684 Here's the graph of the results, almost at the end of the two-week polling period, indicating the proportion of respondents for whom each pixel size is acceptable (including multiple sizes, since many people indicated ranges). The remaining votes did not alter the substantive result. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Thumbnail_size_RfC_9_Oct.jpg&oldid=318790240 Please see Bugzilla 21117 "Raising the default thumbnail image size from 180px to 220px on enwiki": https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21117 where we formally requested the change. This has come up against two issues. Ariel says he wants to wait until the WMF has spare capacity (presumably when they next bring online new servers), and to be there when the rescaling happens. There has also been talk of whether it should be done for all WPs at once (I don't think the Swedes would be pleased). On the matter of specifying larger px sizes for individual images, the guidelines at en.WP shifted a few months ago towards greater encouragement for doing this. Most images, however, are at the tiny default size. See the Manual of Style.
comment #2 seems to have been misplaced; it refers to bug 21117.
No, it's relevant information, because if WMF decides to raise the size for all WPs, this bug request will probably need to be merged with 21117.
Yes, that was the point of my comment there: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21117#c18 Information about the results of a poll on another project, however, are not relevant.
Wrong. If the WMF is going to raise the thumbnails for all projects, the fact that the largest WP community is asking for it is very relevant.
This has happened now as part of the gradual fixing of bug 21117 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 21117 ***
