Description Steve Caruso 2007-02-07 04:28:04 UTC
The Aramaic Wikipedia interwiki link is incorrectly displaying the localized
name for Aramaic (it displays "ܕܥܒܪܸܝܛ" (it's just jibberish) in the "in other
languages" section rather than "ܣܘܪܬ" (Suret) as displayed as the local language
name). This may be the case for other Wikis, too.

Furthermore there are two more problems with the localization:

1) "ܣܘܪܬ" (Suret) is technically incorrect and should be "ܐܪܡܝܐ" (Aramaya) in
all instances as Suret is far too narrow to define the language that the wiki is
written in; which brings me to:

2) The Wiki should be the "Neo-Aramaic Wikipedia" rather than specifically the
"Assyrian Neo-Aramaic Wikipedia" anymore. The Administrator team has been trying
to normalize the language so that most Neo-Aramaic speakers (regardless of
whether or not they speak Assyrian, Chaldean, Turoyo, or Western dialects) would
be able to understand it with relative ease. As such, the Wikipedia's scope has
broadened a bit.

Thanks,
-Steve Caruso

Just to comment for verification since changing names of
languages can be dangerous if one doesn't know the
language: the current link, "ܕܥܒܪܸܝܛ", "d'vrit", literally
saying "in Hebrew" (a different language) spelled
incorrectly, has been in need of change since the
creation of the wiki some time ago. As Steve pointed out,
the correct name should be "ܐܪܡܝܐ", as it appears on
http://wikipedia.org. Also worth mentioning, the name
appears as "ܣܘܪܬ" (a specific dialect of the modern
language) on the List of Wikipedias on WikiMedia. To put
things in perspective, it's akin to having "English" on
wikipedia.org, "American English" as the name on List of
Wikipedias, and "Englow-Saksun" as the interwiki link.

Changed the name for interwikis/language selection in r19958, should be up
within a few days. What do you mean when you say ܣܘܪܬ is the "local language name"?
Comment 3 Steve Caruso 2007-02-16 03:48:22 UTC
The "Language (local)" field found on the Meta list
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias .

Also, was the "Assyrian Neo-Aramaic" changed to "Neo-Aramaic" (i.e. the source
for the column in the same list labeled "Language")? I didn't see any other
changes but the Aramaic name in the revision you linked to (which is correct now).

I also realized that the wikilink that is found in in the same Meta list should
also now point to w:Neo-Aramaic rather than w:Assyrian_Neo-Aramaic (or is that
something that the various templates that I have seen do automatically via the
hard-coded English name?).

The List of Wikipedias is maintained by Mutante, as far as I can tell, certainly
not the developers or sysadmins. Probably the place to ask for a change is at:

http://s23.org/wiki/User:Mutante

If it turns out this is actually in the site configuration somewhere, please
open a new bug (separate reports for separate issues = better for tracking, even
if they're related).
