Somehow I managed to set things up in such a way as te get a  "MySQL functions
missing, have you compiled PHP with the --with-mysql option?" error starting the
wiki.

applying this patch (borrowed from phpmyadmin) did the trick

The installer already tries this, so adding it to the wiki is indeed a good 
idea. :)
