Wikimedia Bugzilla is closed!

Wikimedia has migrated from Bugzilla to Phabricator. Bug reports should be created and updated in Wikimedia Phabricator instead. Please create an account in Phabricator and add your Bugzilla email address to it.
Wikimedia Bugzilla is read-only. If you try to edit or create any bug report in Bugzilla you will be shown an intentional error message.
In order to access the Phabricator task corresponding to a Bugzilla report, just remove "static-" from its URL.
You could still run searches in Bugzilla or access your list of votes but bug reports will obviously not be up-to-date in Bugzilla.

Description Douglas Gardner 2014-10-15 13:16:05 UTC
The English string under the real name field in [[Special:Preferences]] (prefs-help-realname) reads:
> Real name is optional. If you choose to provide it, this will be used for giving you attribution for your work.

Afaik, the only attribution that uses the real name field is the "Edited on 1 January 1970 00:00 by Joe Bloggs" message in the footer.

This message isn't shown if $wgMaxCredits is set to 0, so the help message is misleading: we should squelch this message if $wgMaxCredits is set to zero, or modify it to list other places we use the real name (for example, salutations in emails).
Comment 1 Nemo 2014-10-15 16:35:31 UTC
MediaWiki can't control how attribution is given: even for core, action=credits is disabled on many wikis, while action=history shows username; and extensions do as they wish.

So I'd just make that "will" a "may".
