Description FocalPoint 2014-08-24 10:43:54 UTC
Intention:
The Language settings are automatically showing languages of neighbouring countries, however, the system promises to bring in languages we are using

Steps to Reproduce:
1. I have occasionally selected fr it, de links manually (using the options after clicking on the box (...))
2. When I see an article, I only get the interwiki links to en-wikipedia and...
3. ...I constantly get links to ar-, be-, bg-, etc wikipedia which I have never selected in the past and I do not need.

Actual Results:
When looking at other pages in el-wikipedia, I get a variety of links, for example an-wikipedia, bat-smg-wikipedia, br-wikipedia but I do not get the links to the languages that I selected.

Please note that this problem has also been reported to the Village Pump of el-Wikipedia by another user - see [[:el:Βικιπαίδεια:Αγορά#Ρυθμίσεις γλώσσας]].

Expected Results:
Users would be happy to be able to select which links to see.
Otherwise, I would put as default the 10 biggest wikipedias.

Reproducible: Always

Thanks for taking the time to report this!
Please elaborate on the steps to reproduce, as I have no idea where to go (URLs, some pane) and what to do where (names of links or icons).

I refer to the function Compact language links. I have used a few links in fr, de, it wikipedias, but the system only brings up the en wikipedia in interwiki links when I am connected with my username.

please let me know if this is clear, since I understand that it is not always easy to explain.
Comment 3 FocalPoint 2014-08-24 15:29:45 UTC
....I meant... brings up only the en-wikipedia links (which I have used), as well as several others, but it does not bring the interwiki links off the other wikipedias I have used (like fr, it, de).
Comment 4 Andre Klapper 2014-08-24 16:12:32 UTC
I finally found ""Compact language links"" under https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures I guess, so this refers to some beta feature?

Still some exact steps to follow, click by click, with a specific example, are welcome, in order to reproduce and see the same behavior/outcome. I don't know exactly how to "use a few links in fr, de, it wikipedias" (and what 'use' means here).
Comment 5 FocalPoint 2014-08-24 18:50:40 UTC
1. Enable the beta feature "Compact language links"
2. Go to a few random articles and select (this is what I meant by "use" - sorry) the interwikis you would like to connect to usually, let us assume ru, hu, el, es.
3. Go to another random article and check if the ru, hu, el, es appear.

If they do appear, then the beta feature "Compact language links" works fine.

If not, it does not (at least, this is what I understand it should be doing....)
Comment 6 James Forrester 2014-09-01 15:32:25 UTC
Compact language links is part of ULS.

They are.

This is not what the feature is about.
Your suggestion is already covered by other reports, see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Universal_Language_Selector/Design/Interlanguage_links
I'm closing this report because it mixes too many different things and is not actionable (see also https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug ).
Comment 8 FocalPoint 2014-09-06 07:28:44 UTC
This feature is supposed to show (see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Universal_Language_Selector/Design/Interlanguage_links):
"the languages that are more relevant to you", that is to ... "Show only a short list of the relevant languages for the user based on geo-IP, ***previous choices*** and browser settings of the current user'

The feature promised to show "relevant languages" based on "previous choices" does not work properly.

If you consider the issue closed, well, it is not closed for me and it does not make the feature work.

If you choose to ignore the present complaint, well, my solution is easy: I will disable the feature.

The feature "relevant languages" based on "previous choices" does not work properly, whether you acknowledge it or not. The bug is not resolved.

> The feature "relevant languages" based on "previous choices" does not work

It does. Certainly it has some (pretty big) limitations, which however are covered in other reports.
Note than none of your (missing) "expected results" are related to "previous choices":

But they're still covered in separate reports.
Comment 10 FocalPoint 2014-09-06 08:40:21 UTC
You keep mentioning another issue. Please ignore it. It was my fault to mention it.

The problem reported here is that the feature does not deliver results based on previous choices as promised.

I am a user, a customer of this feature, and you are telling me that it does work? Then why should I bother to report it? Do we want to put this problem under the carpet? I hope not.

I fail to see the report where the issue is mentioned as "still open".

I see in
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Universal_Language_Selector/Design/Interlanguage_links#Fixed

in the section Fixed:
Previous choices not remembered.

Well, it is not fixed.

If you do not want to acknowledge that there is a problem, I cannot follow you. There is a problem and I see that it is considered fixed.

It is not. The issue is UNRESOLVED.
