Description T. Gries 2004-10-08 20:39:14 UTC
I propose to change from

   "minor edit"

to

"Mark this as typo correction (minor edit)"

Of course I know how to do it locally in the MediaWiki namespace, but I find the
proposal useful, because it clarifies what "minor edit" stands for resp. can
stand for.

There are a lot of other things that are usually marked as minor edits.
Some examples are, grammar corrections, formatting fixes, reverting
vandalism, and adding interlanguage links and categories.

[written simultaneous to comment #1]
I think the problem is that minor edits don't necessarily involve typos: a
formatting change, for instance, or a change that makes a sentence read better,
but is an "improvement" rather than a "correction". All these are (arguably)
valid uses of the "minor edit" flag; and the very arguability of it would be
another disadvantage to the change: not everyone uses the same definition of
"minor edit", and the result of any consensus is unlikely to fit on one line.

Also, I'm not sure the word "typo" is all that universally understandable.

Perhaps better would be to simply link the text "This is a minor edit" to the
description of when to use this feature.
Comment 3 T. Gries 2004-10-09 17:54:24 UTC
I amend my proposal to:

"Mark this as typo or small layout correction (minor edit)"

The background is, that in our international company non-native speakers often
have problems to understand what it means and refrain from using the "minor
edit" flag. The goal of this proposal is to find a somehow "better" text - thank
you for your contributions. Tom

Just edit the interface at [[MediaWiki:Minoredit]].

If you want this to be done on wikipedia, contact your local community and
get community support. Sysops will then be change the text.
