Please enable VisualEditor as a Beta Feature on Wikimedia Commons, not enabled by default. Beta features are (as far as I know) completely harmless so I do not think a community discussion is necessary but I would be happy to start one if necessary. I will post a heads-up on this on Wikimedia Commons village pump.

James told me that by default VE will be active for File, Category, User and main (gallery) namespaces. Please enable it for Creator: and Institution: too, as pages in these NS use one template, respectively {{Creator}} & {{Institution}}. With TemplateData on them it will be very convenient to use VE to edit them.
