LQT and Echo together look messy: attachment 15183 [details].
Despite the problems of the red icon, it's better for the two to be aligned and the textual label consumes too much space anyway: hence, mimic the Echo icon in LQT and merge the two when both are available (very rare anyway). 
For that, we can ensure the number of new messages is added to Echo's notification count and then the link to Special:NewMessages appears in the Echo popover.

If merging the two is too hard, that can be left to a later step; as a first step we could just have a second icon, preferably with slightly different colours.
