Description Dave Yost 2006-06-16 18:52:36 UTC
This editing in the tiny scrollable text area is getting old. There should be a plug-in architecture for selecting how
eding is done, and it should be a user preference to pick the old way or some new way.

The new way I would like would be that a dedicated editing window pops up, where I can do my editing. If I make
that window bigger, the editing text area gets bigger. The Save and Save Preview buttons are always visible at the
bottom; you don't have to scroll to them. I would advocate this as the default way to edit, except many people would
never see the pop-up window because of badly-implemented pop-up blocking features of their browser.

Different preference settings would allow the selection of competing editors, some with Java Applet, some using a
native platform editor, some JavaScript, whatever.

Marking as enhancement.

WONTFIXing, new windows are so 2006.

Browsers have native textarea resize now. And one of the design teams is aiming to make the save, summary, etc... functionality always in view.

So there are better ways to deal with the improvements described and most of them already have someone working on them.

The only stuff I can think of that aren't being done would be a WikiEditor full-screen (well, maybe not 'fullscreen' full-screen, but that might be another idea) mode and an editor popout for dual monitors (visit an edit screen, pop out another edit window, move that edit window to another monitor, when you hit preview the preview shows up in the screen to the left). But those would be different bugs.
