The thumbnails / files are served by an unpuppetized instance deployment-upload which run a nginx proxy and uses scripts in /data/project/scripts.

We should create a Swift cluster in beta, import the files from /data/project/upoad7 and points MediaWiki to the Swift cluster.

I'm going to try to set up a swift cluster in labs that beta can use.  Will update as I go...

Also, faidon just said "the other part that may need a modification is the custom middleware that we use in prod we may end up ditching that altogether, or not... but if we don't, and beta needs it (not obvious if it will), then it might need some mods to work only for the "beta" account"

which I need to understand.

Clarifying question for me:

Is there a reason we want it to be a shared Swift cluster for all of labs that the Beta Cluster uses instead of a cluster that only Beta uses?

Reason I ask: I'm worried about it falling over due to random other things in WMF Labs causing Beta Cluster to be broken and causing developers angst.
