Description Jean-Fred 2014-03-15 17:56:56 UTC
Amara / Universal Subtitles is an awesome tool to easily add subtitles to videos.

As part of the 2011 (?) multimedia Beta, we used to have Amara integrated on Wikimedia Commons, but not anymore (not sure when that was discontinued).

At the moment, the workflow to add subtitles is:
1. Go to Amara
2. Give it the URL of the video on Wikimedia Commons
3. Write subtitles
4. Export and import into Commons.

See <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Tawakkol_Karman_%28English%29.ogv.en.srt> for an example result of this workflow.

This has several drawbacks:
* It is quite cumbersome
* Subtitles may get further edited on Amara and on Wikimedia Commons, and diverging
* Editing for typos on Wikimedia Commons is easy, but not editing the timing.

What would it take to have Amara back in Wikimedia Commons?
