It should be possible to disable galleries is category pages (possibly with a keyword such as __NOGALLERY__) for categories that are used to mark copyright images, as the resulting pages (see link) are not a fair use of the images. Categories marked as __NOGALLERY__ should link to the images inline instead, listing them with the other pages in the category.
Fixed in SVN.
This new magic word has no effect during editing and previewing of a category. The thumbnails are shown. Bug or feature?

Yes, but not in edit-mode. If you do not have the option "Show preview on first edit" hit "show preview" please. Do you see filenames or thumbnails/icons?

Somewhat beside the point, but I rarely edit category pages - some short initial "about", and that's it. So this reopened bug won't hit me too often. Unfortunately some users revert additions of __NOGALLERY__ because they think that a Wiki is for broadband users, and seeing images is more fun where they load fast. With a __NOGALLERY__ override in the "preferences" there would be a better chance that it sticks.
This feature seems to have stopped working.
The function of __NOGALLERY__ is broken. For example see [[Commons:Category:Spoken Wikipedia - German]]
WORKSFORME? Not sure why you guys think it doesn't work...
The en.wiki version was definitely broken for the last few days, but is working now. Could be out of date software on different servers I suppose....
It doesn't work in preview, which confuses people.
Hmm weirdness. Although it still works for old categories (as linked previously), it doesn't seem to work for new ones. Perhaps it has *stopped* working? See http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimania_2006_-_audio_recordings .
