The PNG elements of MediaWiki quickly begin to look terrible as the zoom is increased in a browser (especially compared to the rest of Vector, which scales up very smoothly). Anything above 100% zoom results in noticeable pixelation. This is especially relevant as high resolution monitors become more common, and users will need to increase zoom to make the overall scale of a wiki page be usable and look good. The site logo is the worst offender. Other problem icons include: *All the Notification icons *The Search magnifying glass *The Watchlist star *The Wikilove heart
I think all of those already have separate bugs filed for them blocking bug 32101.
See also http://caniuse.com/svg According to that site, 84% of global web users can view SVG. If that's anywhere near correct, we'd need PNG fallback. Still, it's high time we used vector files for those who can use them.
