Gmail recently introduced this: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/3055016 (though it's only an old idea and something they started doing a few years ago: http://maffulli.net/2011/06/30/leveraging-the-address-book-as-your-social-network/ ). The result is that my bank just sent me a newsletter with instructions on how to move their emails to a more prominent tab (and reminding me I can still switch back to the old interface). It seems we can't ignore Gmail. :) Not as urgent as getting our mailers out of blacklists, but MediaWiki emails are sometimes critical so at some point we'll probably want to look into this more. We might end up deciding that we should tell our Gmail users to add some of our email addresses to their contacts if they want to be sure not to miss password reminders, important security notifications and the like (after making sure there is a specific address from which we send such important messages).
FYI: I receive Echo messages in the "Updates" tab.
