Description rschen7754.wiki 2013-10-10 08:12:42 UTC
Add support for geoshapes as a datatype to Wikidata, to accurately represent linear and polygon geographic objects.

There are over 5,000 KML files located at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Attached_KML; it would be nice if these could be moved to Wikidata without file conversion, and thus made available to all Wikimedia projects (note https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q54725 which has an article in 25 Wikipedias).

We should look into using http://leafletjs.com for this.

leaflet.js is great for displaying maps and data. :)

There is Leaflet Draw for editing vector data (e.g. polygons or lines). https://github.com/Leaflet/Leaflet.draw/

In the backend, we still need new DataValue(s) and DataTypes. We shoudla also think about using the geojson format whenever possible for storing the actual data and in external representation. (api, dumps, etc.)

Supporting KML would be awesome but will require some more thought and might be more tricky to integrate with Wikidata. ContentHandler and another content type might be suitable for supporting KML.

I think it would be good to also look at PostGIS and ensure compatibility:

http://postgis.net/

It would be really nice to pull queries from Wikidata into a map project.

Just a reminder that efforts should be coordinated with:
