I frequently justify long and complex changes in a single diff to ease reviewing them, and I find that the current limit of a few hundred characters (or whatever the exact count is) is too low, and I am forced to resort to awkward abbreviations and runningwordstogether. ex. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Linux_kernel&diff=36158791&oldid=36158278 I can't think of any downsides to lengthening the max character count except perhaps the buffer being filled up with garbage/copyvios/offensive material, but as the current length allows for that, and we've already seen some abuse where anons added in privacy-violating material, I do not think this will enable many ill uses.
Edit comments are meant to be short and to the point. Long, detailed discussion belongs on a talk page, where users can communicate back and forth. Resolving WONTFIX.
