Ampersands in wikilinks
As part of the move towards a stable version of articles, we would like to create wikilinks to particular versions of
the article. (e.g. Article/Stable would be a redirect to a particular article version).

I can't seem to create a wikilink from the Permanent link from the link on the left side toolbox to do this. I.e.
#REDIRECT permanent link from the /Stable ... /Stable should this be a redirect to permanent link.

To demonstrate, I tried this with Common Unix Printing System/Stable as #REDIRECT
Common_Unix_Printing_System&oldid=32844867 ... but that doesn't work, it gives this address:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Common_Unix_Printing_System%26oldid%3D32844867&action=edit

which implies the article isn't there, but replace %26 with & in the address bar (and delete the "&action=edit) and it
works, giving what I want:
[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Common_Unix_Printing_System&oldid%3D32844867 http://
en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Common_Unix_Printing_System&oldid%3D32844867]

i.e. there is a problem with the ampersand in the wikilink or in REDIRECT or the combination of ampersand and
oldid= (&oldid= gets rendered in the address bar as %26oldid%3D which does not get recognized as the same
thing).

INVALID, there's isn't a problem with it, you're not supposed to link to it like
that (use the URL syntax) and redirecting to specific revisions is not supported
either.
Comment 2 David Levinson 2006-01-05 23:01:26 UTC
The URL syntax is not supported in features like #REDIRECT. There should be some way within wikipedia to
redirect to a particular article version. This is going to be very important for article validation and stable
versions to avoid forking. Perhaps it should be a feature request rather than a bug, but that capability should
be in the software. How difficult is something like this to implement?

Comment 3 Brion Vibber 2006-01-06 01:03:25 UTC
That would not be supported in redirects. A redirect will take you to some article; what version of it you're
looking it is a separate question.
