When I tried to rename a user who had a global account, I got an error message that should read 

"User USERNAME has been migrated to the unified login system. Renaming it will cause the local user to be detached from the global one."

but reads

"User centralauth-renameuser-merged has been..."

The centralauth-renameuser-merged is not replaced with a username.
