Description Jason Spiro 2005-12-01 22:11:28 UTC
With more icons, the Monobook skin would look better and be easier to find links on.

It'd be great if someone who is good at skin editing could copy the icons from
the Amethyst skin's Navigation bar which is visible at the right-hand side of
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page&useskin=amethyst and paste
them into the left-hand-side bar of the Monobook skin.

(One of the relevant links, "Contact us", has no icon defined. But that's ok.
The Monobook "Contact us" link can reuse the Amethyst skin "move page" link's
icon, which looks kind of like an e-mail sort of icon.)

Thanks! (This bug is related to bug 4136.)

Too many icons make things ugly, cluttered, and hard to use.

WONTFIX.
Comment 2 Jason Spiro 2006-02-05 05:48:21 UTC
Reopening.

I disagree. More icons make it easier to find the item you want from the menu.
This is why, for example, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now have icons next to
all the most-used menu items.

I am not the only one who thinks this. At
http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2005-December/033143.html someone
asked: "I really like the little icons. Is it possible to add those to monobook,
via personal CSS?" Since so few Wikipedians saw that e-mail thread, this person
probably speaks for many others who were left out of the conversation.

Rob, if you are reading this, I'd like your help. I'd like to bring this issue
up in the Village Pump but I'd like to post a screenshot of Amethyst to show
people what the icons look like if possible, since many people don't know and
the Amethyst skin is no longer available on :en. What's the easiest way to get a
screenshot of what Amethyst looks like? Should I try downloading MW 1.4? (I've
checked two non-Wikimedia foundation wikis and neither has the skin available.)

Assigning to Rob.

WONTFIX. I'm sorry you disagree, but it really was *hideous* and slapping icons all
over everything does destroy the visual distinctiveness of the few things that might
have actually benefited from them.

Er, it's considered polite to ask first. I'm with Brion, I'm afraid; I'm not a
fan of excessive icon use, and gut instinct suggests that plastering the things
all over Monobook would spoil it. It stands up quite well alone without the icons.

You will find people will never be 100% pleased with skin changes, due to the
nature of them.
