there is the {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} macro, {{NUMBEROFCATEGORIES}} would be nice as
a logical companion to that.

And maybe more magic words, like NUMBEROFIMAGES, NUMBEROFUSERS ... This would be
nice to put on Special:Statistic.

There already is a variable avalible on Special:Statistics to show the number of
users, and the number of files.

Yes i see now, but there is still need for that, to use on other pages etc.

I've filed a separate Bug 5741 in response to requests at the Vietnamese Wikipedia.

This is fixed by the introduction of the {{PAGESINNS:ns}} and
{{PAGESINNAMESPACE:ns}} variables, but these variables are disabled at the
Wikimedia projects due to server load issues.

Marking FIXED. Getting this enabled on WMF is a different bug.
