The hack is described in [[Help:Sorting#Sorting_with_a_hidden_key]], which leads to [[Wikipedia:HiddenStructure]].

Maybe with HTML5, we can support <td data-sortkey="@@@@@@@1e8">1e8</td>

Have data attributes still not been enabled on Wikimedia? It's been supported for years in JavaScript side.

yes, this is already implemented in the current tablesorter. It all just awaits the WMF switch to HTML5.
