"Today I ran onto [a file description page] that shows usage in three articles here at en wiki but all three articles were deleted more than two years ago. This is not the first time I ran onto usage in deleted en wiki articles." - Denniss, English Wikipedia Technical Village Pump.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say page deletions removed the intended from from imagelinks (as seems to be the case) but that that change never propagated through to globalimagelinks.
