Description Amir E. Aharoni 2012-02-04 18:15:23 UTC
Words in place names in an RTL script appear in the wrong order on the maps. It happens only in long name that span several lines, but this happens quite often. Each word appears correctly, but the order of the words is something like this:
סיטי
לייק
סולט

In Latin script it would something like
City
Lake
Salt

This is an upstream bug, reported in http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/1515.

I think there may be some fix in mapnik for this, in the very latest versions.

That's what i understand from the comments at trac. Who should be poked to get this patch applied?

At the moment we're running with MapQuest's open-use OSM tile server so we can't change that if it's still rendering incorrectly... once we have our own tile servers running we should be able to do something about it I imagine.
Comment 4 Amir E. Aharoni 2012-07-19 23:19:43 UTC
This is still broken. Do we have our OSM tile server already?

Were paused on this till Aude has time post Wikimania to share where she has gotten with the labs build out.

Aude: Could you update this ticket (in case this still makes sense)?
Comment 7 Amir E. Aharoni 2012-10-30 14:05:01 UTC
It does, unfortunately. I checked it a couple of days ago.
Comment 8 Brion Vibber 2013-10-30 00:17:25 UTC
I'm going to have to close this one out for now -- we're going to retire the old app that used this mapping generation system and the new system will either use new map generation (which we'll actually be able to fix) or skip the maps and show a list like we currently do on mobile web.

:(
