In my prefs, I have the edit box width set to 40. when I
start to edit a page, the text box loads up correctly. But
as soon as I type in it, the box extends way beyond the
limits of IE.

Which skin are you using, and if it was monobook
(test.wikipedia.org), is this still the case?

This only happens in the 'old' skins, TODO: remove width
pref and fix width handling in skin.

I have the same problem with IE 5.50 (Windows 95) using the monobook skin, only the edit box always takes up the whole
width (not just 40 columns or whatever I set), then when I start editing it widens further so that only a sliver of the
scroll bar is accessible. Very annoying. No user preference setting fixes the problem.
