Description folengo 2011-10-10 13:16:50 UTC
I copy below the contents of http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#mwEmbed_gadget:_Videos_no_longer_properly_linked_to_description_pages_by_clicking_on_the_thumbnail

Until a short time ago, you could access the file description page of videos by clicking on the thumbnail. As you can check with the polar bear video I attach here, it does not seem to be possible any longer. Does anyone know why it is so ? I think this change must be reverted, because

#) free licenses require to make the licensing information available to readers/viewers
#) even in the case of public domain videos, the uploader should have some form of recognition for his work (the readers/viewers should be able to easily find his user name)
#) Description pages often contain valuable information about the circumstances when the video was taken, which might be useful to readers/viewers.

(I know that the small "enlarge" icon is still available, but in my opinion this is too small, and I guess that only a limited number of viewers are likely to click on this icon).

:No problem on my end, I can click on the thumbnail which takes me to the File:Polar2001.ogg description page. (using the MonoBook skin) Bidgee (<span class="signature-talk">talk</span>) 12:16, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
::I have tried changing my skin to monobook but it is still the same (a "play clip" button is displayed on the thumbnail, which starts the video instead of taking me to the file description page). An other problem is that the "Credits" that display after clicking on the circled "i" in the "menu" is empty. In my view, this "credits" menu option should redirect to the file description page. Also the "embedd on page" "copy code" should include licensing information and author name. Embedding on page without licensing information is a violation of the license. :::As I was trying my best to use Firefogg (See #Cutting videos into parts smaller than 100 MB with or without Firefogg above) I had turned the "Add mwEmbed support for Kaltura Sequencer, Video Playback, Firefogg uploading" gadget in my user preferences. I have removed that gadget and everything is OK again. Teofilo (<span class="signature-talk">talk</span>) 13:14, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

In the updated player ( timed media handler ) we have improved license info parsing and display the "credits" at the end of the video playback and by default when you press the menu button.

The share embed does include license info within the player that your embedding.

If we want more dominate placement we can ask some designers to come up with what would achieve this goal?
Comment 2 folengo 2011-10-10 22:43:16 UTC
I don't know what you mean by "updated player" and by "timed media handler". If it works all fine as you are saying, why doesn't it work on my computer with File:PolarBearsPlayingSDZooFeb09.ogv ? If you don't believe me, do you want me to create a screenshot as evidence that no license info is provided in the empty "credits" thing ?
Comment 3 Michael Dale 2011-10-11 02:54:09 UTC
I am referring to : http://prototype.wikimedia.org/timedmedia/Main_Page that extension is not yet installed on wikimedia sites, but its meant to replace the existing player.

As of right now the author gets named but licence does not.
Comment 6 Marco 2012-12-06 12:52:46 UTC
Not sure if adding the licence to the info is even possible...

[Resetting misleading bug summary.]

Trying with http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boomer_fires_at_Apogee_Stadium.ogv and TimedMediaHandler I cannot get the license displayed **within** the video player (only shown in the license section of the File: page).
Comment 8 Michael Dale 2012-12-06 17:12:08 UTC
This issue is a bit tricky to close without machine readable licence info for the asset. Some gross heuristics could be used that would not cover everything, or we could just say please see description page for license info?

It's more misleading now, I couldn't make sense out of the comments. :) I restored the original concept in a more factual fashion.

You actually can reach the description, but only if you *know* that there's a link: see bug 43747.
Comment 10 Yair Rand 2013-01-23 07:10:56 UTC
Until something can be set up to correctly add the license right there in the box, how about adding a line with something like "License information is available on [the File page]." to the Credits section?
Comment 11 Thorsten 2013-05-24 18:34:11 UTC
An obvious link to the file description page is definitely needed!
