I don't see excessive space there, but I do see an extra separator and an empty section. Is that the issue?

Ok yes, it's the separator. Removing the "on IE7 and IE8" and clarifying summary.

I can see this on en, fr, es, da.wikipedia.org so it seems pretty common.

This is caused by the collection extension adding elements to the page that the Standard skin doesn't know how to handle.
