Created attachment 8965 [details] Wikipedia article Import of arbitrary articles (eg wikipedia, see attachment) ignores several signs (<,>,< etc.) and thus produces wrong layout and/or lacks functionality (e.g. references, headings and everything else stored as html-tags). Import has to accept at least the masked variants (eg. <) and put them "as they are" into the produced wiki article.
What if the problem exactly? Do < signs get dropped completely, or imported as < or something else? Which version of MediaWiki are you experiencing this problem with?
e.g. </ref> simply becomes /ref, i.e. < signs get dropped and references are not created. I use mw 1.16.4
I recommend upgrading to 1.17.0 for a start, But I believe this may be caused by the php & libxml bug from awhile ago (the installer/upgrader will tell you this if the problem combo is found on your system)
