There is a strong community concensus on Wikipedia.org for adding a type of protection *only* on highly vandalized pages to prevent anonymous editing in order to alleviate work by the editors. George W. Bush, for example gets about 30 vandalisms a day, which is a lot to ask for editors to keep up with. You can view the arguments both for and against at the above URL.
