Currently, even the most post to your talk page immediately brings up a giant yellow bar that will not go away until you view the messages. This often disrupts the user's current work, which is annoying and unnecessarily distracting.

There should be a way to dismiss the bar. Either temporarily (for X hours) or dismiss it altogether and put an unread messages count at the top of the page in bold (cf. bug 20103).
