Description Purodha Blissenbach 2008-06-06 21:24:47 UTC
It disappointing when Special:Random ends up showing a no-or-low-profile-information-page. Thus, stub pages (as defined e.g. by stub page size in Special:Preferences) should not be presented by Special:Random. This request is based on an idea by Johannes Rohr.
Comment 1 Purodha Blissenbach 2008-06-06 21:30:01 UTC
An additional idea could be to exclude pages of specific categories, or at least one category, from being Special:Random targets, such as Category:Stub, Category:Disambiguation, Category:ToBeTranslated, or similar.

People use Special:Random for different purposes. For example, I sometimes use it to randomly browse through my wiki to see work-needing articles, so I very much want to see stub articles. I can see the value of your request for users, but for editors, I don't think it's so clear-cut.

Comment 3 Purodha Blissenbach 2008-06-07 15:00:16 UTC
As an editor, I do the same kind of browsing, so I'd then set the stub-limit to something very small, or zero, in order to get to any non-redirect page. Unfortunately for readers, their stub limit defaults to zero, too, but that could imho be changed.

Ah, OK, so you propose a new user preference. I think that would work fine.

By all due respect, I never suggested this or anything similar. The only thing I would suggest is: Resist the temptation to inflate your article count by means of bot-generated year stubs, totally nonsensical area code articles, orphaned disambigutions and so on. The :ksh: Wiki is currently in a deplorable state. The only remedy to that I can think of is: Delete all this pseudo content and write real articles, thereby increasing the likelihood of alt-x hitting real content.

@ Johannes Rohr - this is not the place to voice your grievances against contents of wikis, you are not even an editor of. You are invited to join, and make better content.

It was you, who said, he did not want stub or disambiguation pages in Special:Random. I believe, I only picked up on that, but if you disagree, I take both blame and honour on myself. ;-)

This is a misunderstanding. I only cited my experience with Special:Random as it illustrates the poor state of khs.wp. And I do no believe that there can be a technical solution to what appears to be a social problem to me.

That is to say: with ksh:Special:Random, sorry for spamming.
