Currently, only logged in users can define which version of content pages should be displayed by default (via [[Special:Preferences]] > Stability tab). This option should be available to everyone (logged in and non-logged in user).
This might seems a bit obtrusive to readers
It would depend on how this feature is implemented. I was thinking of the ability for anons to change some basic preferences (see bug 14602). There could be a link next to the "Log in / create account" link pointing to a simple preferences page for anons.
Is this feature unwanted? A link to a preferences page would be less obtrusive.
Perhaps a simple button would be better than a preferences page. Another suggestion that has been brought up would be to give a cookie to anonymous contributors when they first edit a page, so they could see the most recent version by default. This is a separate issue, although if ever it is implemented they should be able to change the default view. Unless there are objections, I'll reopen this feature request.
Any button would either be obtrusive or unlikely to be noticed. I'm not sure we should be slapping this kind of options on readers. It should just "work" and show them the best content. Also, though less important, this could be somewhat annoying in public places (schools/libraries).
Actually, much worse, this would break the squid cache scheme.
