When someone goes to Wikipedia they indend to look up something. Not having the cursor active in the search window wastes time. If someone wants to do something else, they can click over to that, so they haven't wasn't any time by this change.

 No, we will not do this as it would interfere with usability and accessibility -- keyboard navigation and standard forms.
