Some users find it inconvenient to get the error msg when, say, they visit their bookmarked watchlist with expired cookies, and then proceed to the login form, that also takes additional time to hit the login link.

Shrinking the process by one step would increase conveniency for users, as it's done in many sites, such as Google.
