Description Bawolff (Brian Wolff) 2007-12-05 03:40:52 UTC
I was hoping you guys would be able to enable more url schemas for various links on the english Wikinews? We sometimes source streaming videos, and we would very much like to link to them in our sources via syntax as any other link like: http://example.com. When we link them now we just get plain text for mms://ocbmtcwmp.usda.gov/content/ers/StevenMaebusFinalAdjusted.wmv or rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/e120407_credit.rm and we'd much prefer a hyperlink.

So in summary, I would like to request for EN Wikinews:

rtsp://foo is auto-linked
mms://foo is auto-linked

Thanks, Bawolff

Generally I'd rather see a link to a hosting web page on these sorts of things. Direct-linking a video is a lot link direct-linking an image file; you lose surrounding context and have no ability to browse the target site, get at copyright info, grab alternate resolutions or formats, etc.

By going that deep (to low-level implemention details of linking a particular streaming format) you're losing a lot of flexibility and information, which hurts the person who has only the link to go on.

Going to WONTFIX this unless there's some compelling requirement for raw deep streaming video links.
