When I import this xml file I experience the described behaviour

If there are links in an import file, and the link text should contain square brackets, they have to be encoded like this:
[http://www.test.de/test%20%5B1%5D Test [1]]

But when I import such an xml file, the square brackets are converted (not the url encoded ones in the link, but the other ones in the link text), resulting in this:
[http://www.test.de/test%20%5B1%5D Test [1]]

This, of course, breaks the link and changes the way the article page is rendered.

Use [1] . Wikitext in an XML document should be fully encoded, so any instance of "&" in the wikitext will become "&" in the XML.

Thank you very much, Tim!
