I have an installation of mediawiki 1.8.x (wiki.schokokeks.org). Whenever I try to update to a more recent version (no matter if 1.9, 1.10 or 1.11), I get this error:

Query "ALTER TABLE `imagelinks`
 DROP INDEX il_to,
 ADD INDEX il_to(il_to, il_from)
" failed with error code "Schl�ssel ist zu lang. Die maximale Schl�ssell�nge betr�gt 1000 (localhost)".

Sorry for the german error, but I failed to get this error message in english.
