Auto-completion fields could have a different style, colored corner, for example. This will allow to advertise the feature to the user and help establish the expectation.
And optionally use standard HTML select listboxes.

In version 0.6.4, autocomplete fields now have their own CSS class name - "autcompleteInput". This lets admins set special formatting on just these inputs. I don't know if that's a good enough solution.
