Description Erland Lewin 2005-02-21 18:18:55 UTC
This bug refers to the Swedish sv.wiktionary.org project.

When I tried to create a new account with an initial lowercase character, I got
the error "Det användarnamn som du angett finns inte" which in english means
"The username you specified does not exist".

When I did the above with a username with an initial upper case character,
everything worked. Creating accounts with initial lower case character also
worked on other wiktionaries.

There are three problems:

1. It should be possible to create a user with an initial lower-case character.
2. The error message does not make sense in this situation.
3. Until the bug is fixed, it would be nice if the login page was modified to
inform users that they must specify a username with an initial upper case character.

The login screen now tells the user that usernames has to be capitalized.

You cannot create accounts with a lowercase letter; this is by design. When we switch in common user
accounts for all wikis, a lowercase-initial account would be inaccessible.

this bug (bug 1574: Account cannot be created with initial lower case letter)
and
bug 1818: Creating a new username that is not capitalized doesn't work
seems duplicates

*note*
The first letter of an account name is capitalized regardles of the setting of
$wgCapitalLinks. However for account 'Foo' both pages 'user:Foo' *and*
'user:foo' (and all talk pages and subpages) can exist side by side. See:
Bug 5134: Disalow lowercase pagenames in the user and user talk namespace if
$wgCapitalLinks=false; (capitalization is off)

Heh, there's a non-wontfixed request for the same functionality from later.

Let's not have this as a DUPE, but the other way around.

Bug 26396 which has been merged into this has some good comments; see in particular bug 26396 comment 17.

Restore WONTFIX per bug 26396 comment 24: this will not be done on Wikimedia projects, even if bug 26396 happened to be fixed.
Even if we allowed this (IMHO confusing) behaviour, we would have to disable creation of most such accounts when they're similar to existing ones (probably AntiSpoof already takes care of this)... even more confusing.
