* Add a clearly visible "Add an image" link on the edit page.
* Add a small wizard-like page for creating an image link and setting
  all necessary options ( "|thumb" etc. )

The learning curve for handling images became to steep.

Of course, it was much harder to create *the same effects* when people had to
manually create the appropriate <div> markup (and very hard to work out what
*somebody else* was doing with it...). Not that that means we shouldn't make it
*even easier*, obviously, I just thought I'd say that.

I question whether there's a *huge* benefit to be had in doing this, since we
*do* have several pages on the English Wikipedia explaining how to use images in
articles, and other wiki users can refer to these. I should think that most
users who don't "get" the syntax first time don't have too many further problems
after asking for help or consulting the documentation.

On the other hand, a nice little JavaScript-based popup which takes the options
and inserts the requisite markup into the edit box would be soooo cute. :)

perhaps annoying as well...just as confusing to have users edit their own
javascript files as learn how to use the image thumbnails in my opinion.

This sounds like Extension:Add Media Wizard. Adding Michael Dale as CC.

Been a part of the toolbar forever. Also included in the new toolbar :)

Part of Michael Dale's Add Media Wizard like comment #4 says. Closing as WFM. Issues with either aspect can be filed as needed.

I would add that, there are thousands of users using the AMW via the "enable beta" pages such as http://bit.ly/9P144i

The AMW also now exists as an extension that can be used on local wikis: http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/AddMediaWizard
