Why not mention somewhere on Special:Allpages, Special:Categories the
total number of items, or else, e.g., on Special:Categories one has to click
and click finally reaching the end, to learn how many clicks it will
take to get there. Choosing the limit=500 link shortens the process
but still one has to obediently click until finally reaching the end.
