Description Dominic 2006-11-11 08:47:00 UTC
For the same reasons that revisions occasionally need to be hidden (personal
info, libel), we sometimes come across log entries that need to be hidden. This
is when personal info or libel is put in a page name, and then when it is
deleted or moved it remains visible in the logs. Similarly with user name
creations, renames and uploads, and conceivably protections and blocks. Whenever
this happens, local users are forced to find a developer to get them to do it
for them. If at all possible, local users with oversight should be able to hide
log entries in the same limited circumstances as revisions.

Is anything happening with this soon? It's often quite an urgent matter with problem information in logs, and devs aren't always around, or willing to remove the entries, whilst stewards generally are.
Comment 3 Rob Church 2007-09-02 16:24:22 UTC
I understand that this is waiting on a rather awkward schema change to be completed, at least, if we're to have reliable hiding of log entries such that they could be restored in the case of abuse, which is always an important consideration.

I believe Aaron's work on the proper revision deletion system also covers log entries, too.

You might want to mask the objectionable content instead of hiding it completely, if you don't want it to appear as if the Cabal is manipulating history.
Comment 6 Aaron Schulz 2008-03-24 21:20:08 UTC
This would be best done using revisiondelete. Oversight was intended as a temporary hack anyway.
Comment 7 MZMcBride 2008-07-22 01:00:46 UTC
Reopening bug. Not resolved in default MediaWiki installation or on Wikimedia wikis. Not sure why it was marked WONTFIX.
Comment 8 Aaron Schulz 2008-09-18 11:42:34 UTC
This is done with revisiondelete. It should not be done in the temporary Oversight extension. Request to enable it would be a separate bug.
