Again, this is a feature request. For any registered user, it would be nice to
provide a customizable personal left sidebar. Users can add favorite links there.

Currently, some users are using their User pages to do the similar things as a
workaround.

I got this idea from TWiki actually. TWiki has better solution than mediawiki to
handle sidebar, topbar and bottombar. We may borrow any good features from any other
wiki engines to enrich mediawiki when necessary.

Wikipedia:User:Kate figured out a way of doing that using the user customizable
css and js

This can't really be done in a way that's compatible with the sidebar cache, et
al. Marking for attention later, rather than dismissing it out of hand, however.

Gadgets / user scripts are usually used to do this today, but it's not super user-friendly. Reopening as an enhancement request and updating summary.

I think there are definitely things that could be done to make this possible... See also bug 16943, an enhancement request for a nice user-friendly GUI system to customize the sidebar on a sitewide basis.
