Description Nux 2006-08-30 19:20:26 UTC
Hi.

I belive it would be great to be able to send params to templates (pages
containing params) through URL. This would have beneficial impact on pages like
"Picture of the Day" and probably some pages that could be personalized
according to the needs of users.

For PotD you could have for example one template with arguments like
{{{year}}},{{{month}}},{{{lang}}} and one could simply supply links like:
[[{{fullurl:Template:Potd|tplp_year=2006&tplp_month=09&tplp_lang=en}} Sep]]

"tplp_" prefix stands for "template parameter", and should be used so as not to
conflict with some exisiting and future functions.

If you think about opportunities, then you'll see that this functionality would
save quite a lot of db space and users' effort. For example translators might
like to have the template in their language and currently they have to create a
new page for that.
