Description Michiel Sikma 2006-06-26 20:09:59 UTC
I would like to request the ability to make paragraphs that are noted with a
letter rather than a number.

This would be useful for parts of Wikipedia articles that are not part of the
actual article's content, such as "External links" and "Further reading", but
most particularly "Footnotes" and "References". For example, the wikicode "++
External links ++" instead of "== External links ==" would have that particular
section noted as "A. External links" rather than, if it is the eighth paragraph,
"8. External links" at the top of the page in the table of contents.

I'm sure this would eventually be adopted by the manual of style and become the
preferred usage method for such headers. A note regarding this issue: it should
likely be possible to nest normally numbered paragraphs inside lettered
paragraphs (e.g. A. External links, 1. Site links, 2. Forum links, etc., when
the paragraphs succeeding paragraph A have a less important level of heading).

Note: [[mw:Typography Refresh]] currently experiments with dropping the numbering scheme in the TOC.
Is there any other place where numbers are shown than the TOC?

There isn't, and showing them in the TOC is disabled by default too (it's the "Auto-number headings" preference).
Comment 4 Bartosz Dziewoński 2014-05-21 19:33:26 UTC
Please ignore what I just said.

The TOC is the only place they're show in by default, but the "Auto-number headings" preference (disabled by default) enables showing them on the actual headings as well.
