When a comment (<!-- like this -->) was placed inside <ref> tags on the [[Brown
University]] article (diff:
[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Brown_University&diff=48959444&oldid=48617928],
it's a large diff as I was converting the article to cite, the bit I'm referring
to is the second change in the first section, line 39), the comment appeared in
the text. When I looked down to the references section where the cited material
was, where the comment would have been in the text there was the following
string of text: "UNIQ60e03810afc8773-HTMLCommentStrip6c2bcb45683b8a5300000001."
When the comment was removed (diff:
[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Brown_University&diff=48960091&oldid=48960031]),
the offending text went away.
