There used to be a NUMBEROFFILES variable, used on the Commons Main Page and other places. It no longer works.
It has been disabled on Wikimedia and will probably be removed from the source tree, the implementation is too slow.
Alright, changing this bug to an enhancement request. Since the Commons is all about images, it would be really nice to have a way to report how many images we have, equivalent to the NUMBEROFARTICLES variable on Wikipedia. In principle, it's possible to implement this efficiently: Special:Upload simply increments a variable, and Special:Delete decrements it.
Product => Wikimedia web sites, it's still in the tree, just not on Wikimedia
It might be nice to maintain separate counters for different file types.
What about NUMBEROFMEDIAFILES? ;-)

Er, never mind. That's just http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:NUMBEROFMEDIAFILES, which is nearly worthless. Having an actual counter would be much better.
